Life-size bronze statue of Archbishop Desmond Tutu to be unveiled in Human Rights Month

The world’s greatest exhibition in bronze will soon welcome someone who needs no introduction: on 23 March 2023, in commemoration of Human Rights Month, the life-size statue of the late Emeritus Archbishop Desmond Mpilo Tutu will join the other 100 iconic resistance leaders in Long March to Freedom, taking his rightful place in South Africa’s journey to democracy.

The Long March to Freedom exhibit has come to Cape Town! Residents can now visit Century City to view the tribute to some of the most iconic African and international struggle icons.

“It is a great honor to call Century City the new home of The Long March to Freedom statues,” said Chris Blackshaw, CEO of Century City Property Owners’ Association. “We are able to give this exhibition exceptional prominence along the N1, opposite entrance 4 of Canal Walk. Together with our existing natural heritage site, Intaka Island, we are very excited to contribute so richly to the education of our children in the Western Cape.”

“Then I visited the Workhorse Bronze Foundry and gained a whole new appreciation for the creation of this type of art. I went to Workhorse last week as part of the Long March to Freedom art walk. Several of the Long March to Freedom sculptures were made there, and it was cool to follow the path of these historic bronze figures that I’ve now visited several times in different locations. More generally though, it was cool to visit the place where so many of South Africa’s great sculptors make their art”.

As part of an ambitious project to honour the activists in the fight for freedom, South Africa has unveiled the first 96 out of 400 life-sized sculptures in its National Heritage Monument's Long March to Freedom at Pretoria. The Long March to Freedom is a monumental celebration of South Africa's Struggle for Freedom and Democracy. It displays a history that brought forth many heroes in the battle against colonialism and oppression that began in the 17th century.
