Tania Lee

Professional Profile:

I began sculpting around 1996 and quickly found an affinity for creating realistic animals, figures and portraits. While most of my sculptures are bronze, I have also produced detailed pieces in ceramic, pewter and cement.

Though I had little formal training, I developed both technical skills and conceptual understanding of sculpture by working closely and assisting a number of established South African artists.

My focus is on closely observed, lifelike studies that convey the empathy I feel with my subjects. I am drawn to quiet dignity and try to convey this in each of my portraits. Bolder statements of character are often expressed in fleeting facial expressions or easily overlooked gestures, and it is these subtleties that I try to observe and capture. I am based in the South Peninsula, Cape Town.
