Duarte was born in Portugal in 1942.

He studied Commercial Art at the Witwatersrand Technical College in Johannesburg from 1959 – 1961 with further studies in London in 1964.

Duarte began his professional career as an illustrator of children’s books in 1967, with depiction of the human figure always his subject and dominant interest.

Duarte has been painting and modelling sculpture since 1970. He has had exhibitions in Johannesburg, Durban, Lisbon, Birmingham, Amsterdam, Sydney, Bern and Gaborone. His work is represented in Johannesburg and Durban CCMA Government offices, Springs Municipality, University of Botswana, Reserve Bank of Botswana and Margate Art Museum.

Duarte live in Kwazulu Natal.
